Lesson Level Selector
Check out our Lesson Selector to help guide which Level the swimmer should be in! This guide was created with the guidance of the American Red Cross Level descriptions and The Works WSI professionals. Please note that any registered participant may be assessed during their time in lessons and recommended to a different level based on the instructors observations. ALL SKILLS FOR EACH LEVEL MUST BE MET TO MOVE FORWARD. INSTRUCTORS WILL INDICATE THIS AFTER COMPLETION OF THE LEVEL. This tool is a created as a general guide to eliminate guessing at registration time. If you have questions, please reach out to our Aquatics Team.
Group Lessons Class Descriptions
We suggest reaching out to a member of our Aquatics team before registration with any level-specific questions. Not all levels are offered every session.
AMERICAN RED CROSS SWIMMING LEVELS MARKED BELOW
- Parent and Child familiarizes children between the ages of 6 months to 18 months with the water and teaches fundamental swimming readiness skill by incorporating songs and games into water activities.
- This level will provide safety information for parents and teach techniques parents can use to orient their children to the water.
- It is for children between the ages of 18 months to 3 years old or for those fearful or not ready to be independent without a parent.
- Accompanied by their parent, they continue to improve on skills introduced in the Parent and Child class, while learning beginner Preschool Level 1 skills and one on one instruction with the instructor.
- Water safety knowledge for parents and caregivers is part of this level.
- Little Fish is an introduction to Preschool Level 1
- Children ages 2-3 develop basic swimming skills such as reaching for submerged objects, kicking on front and back, supported floating, blowing bubbles, and getting their face wet.
- This class works to encourage more independence (Parental assistance might be needed, so please bring a bathing suit) with an emphasis on safety.
- Children ages 3 and up earn to enter and exit the water using ladder, steps or side, to blow bubbles through mouth and nose, bob to open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects.
- Children begin to develop comfort in the water while learning front and back glides, floating, and rolling over.
- Other skills include alternating and simultaneous leg actions and arm actions on front and back, treading water using arm and hand actions and combined arm and leg actions on front and back.
- Children learn to enter and exit water by stepping or jumping from the side, fully submerge and hold breath, bob, open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects.
- Children learn front jellyfish and tuck floats, front and back glides and floats, how to recover to a vertical position, change direction of travel while swimming on front or back, and how to roll from front to back and back to front.
- Participation in this class is fully dependent on instructor recommendation.
- Children refine skills from Preschool Level 2 with less instructor support.
- These skills include: floating independently, treading water, recovering from a float to a vertical position, fully submerging, and combined arm and leg action on front and back.
- Swimmers should be comfortable going underwater and swimming (with or without instructor support) in deep water.
- Swimmers who are successful in Preschool Level 2 are recommended for this level.
Students will learn how to feel comfortable in the water and safely enjoy it by helping them develop positive attitudes and safe practices around water.
In Level 1 children ages 5 and up learn:
- To enter and exit the water using ladder, steps or side, to blow bubbles through mouth and nose, bob to open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects.
- While learning front and back glides and floats, recovery to vertical position and to roll from front to back and back to front, children begin to develop comfort in the water.
- Other skills include alternating and simultaneous leg and arm actions on front and back, treading water and combined arm and leg actions on front and back.
Children will learn basic swimming skills, including:
- Enter and exit water by stepping or jumping from the side, fully submerge and hold breath, bob, open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects, and an introduction to rotary breathing.
- Children learn front jellyfish and tuck floats, front and back glides and floats, how to recover to a vertical position, change direction of travel while swimming on front or back, and how to roll from front to back and back to front.
Building on the skills introduced in Level 2 through additional guided practice in deeper water, children learn to:
- Enter water by jumping from side, back float, survival float, and rotary breathing.
- Skills that will be introduced include; flutter, scissor, dolphin, and breaststroke kicks on front, front crawl, elementary backstroke and treading water.
This is an advanced level with many skills to perfect. Most students may complete Level 4 several times before passing all the necessary skills. In this level participants develop confidence and improve other aquatic skills including:
- Swimming under water, feet-first surface dives, survival swimming, front crawl and backstroke open turns, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly, plus flutter and dolphin kicks on back.
- To advance, participants must also be able to tread water using 2 different kicks.
Passing Level 4 or swimming at a Level 4 skill level is a prerequisite for joining our Pre-Swim Team.
Children learn further coordination and refinement of strokes in Level 5. We'll cover:
- Front flip turn and backstroke flip turn while swimming, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly and sculling.
Swimmers develop further coordination and refinement of strokes in our Level 5/6 Advanced Stroke Clinic.
Some new skills include:
- Flip turns.
- Strokes to be reviewed are front crawl, backstroke, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, and butterfly.
- Distance swimming and advanced safety topics are also learned in Level 5/6.
- Swimmers will practice survival floats and jumping into deep water.
In this level, students refine the strokes to swim with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Students learn to:
- Swim 500 yards continuously using any 3 strokes of choice, swimming at least 50 yards of each stroke.
- The class includes more complex safety skills, jumping into deep water and performing a survival float for 5 minutes, rolling onto back and performing a back float for 5 minutes, performing a surface dive retrieving an object from the bottom of the pool at a depth of 7-10 feet, returning to the surface and the starting point.
This program is for adults who would like to learn to swim and/or are ready to be introduced to stroke development in a safe, comfortable environment amongst peers.
Pre-Swim team is an American Red Cross level 5 and level 6 class. It focuses on the following:
- Flip turns.
- Strokes to be reviewed are front crawl, backstroke, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, and butterfly.
